Most of us dream of large open floor plans with more rooms than we really even need. And with those big dreams, we sometimes lose track of making the best of what we already have. But that’s not the case in Patty’s small apartment in Savannah, Georgia. She utilizes some design tricks to make a small living area feel wide, open, and spacious.
A neutral color palate really brightens the space and makes the room seem a lot larger than it really is. Patty used a balance of shades of white and pastels with natural wood tones to create the ultimate cozy living room. The mix of textures in the same color family adds subtle interest to the room without pushing too much contrast.
She took a bold approach when it came to the layout and it really works. The loveseat is positioned a few feet in front of the balcony door with just enough room for the door to fully open. Most renters would see this room and never think it was possible to have a sofa and a loveseat but Patty thinks out of the box when it comes to layouts. She was able to create the perfect conversation area without compromising functionality.
Patty’s design inspiration comes mostly from nature. She is instantly drawn to wood, plants, and muted color tones. Her boyfriend made this great wooden wall display and it really embodies a nature-focused room. It’s a perfect alternative to the generic store-bought shelving that is found in cookie-cutter homes. Special touches like this are the perfect way to add character to an apartment that would otherwise be pretty basic.
Wall art in the hallway ties the room together with the rest of the space and gives her home a cohesive look.
A small, uncluttered TV stand in a white finish keeps the room from feeling too cluttered. When working with an apartment, keeping furniture to scale is super important.
Apartments require creative ideas when it comes to storage and Patty hit it out of the park with this trunk. It’s great for extra blankets, books, and DVDs. She can keep all of her living room essentials at arms-length without any of it being seen.
So how is she able to have such a bright and neutral room without worrying about damaging all the light colors? Her secret is washable slipcovers. She, her boyfriend, and their sweet little dog can live comfortably knowing that if something gets spilled, the slipcovers can be thrown in the washer and look brand new again.
So all you apartment-dwellers, no more excuses! Take some of Patty’s living room inspiration and get cozy with your space. After all, with a little creativity, any house (or apartment) can be your dream home.
A special thanks to Patty for allowing me to share her amazing decorating skills. I am so impressed with what she has done and look forward to seeing more of her home.
