Seasonal decorating is one of my absolute favorite things to do inside a home.
It’s your chance to experiment with new colors, tones, patterns, and textures that you normally wouldn’t use.
And with great stores like Target, HomeGoods, TJ Maxx, and even Wal-Mart, it’s more affordable than ever to create a gorgeous and stylish space on a super-tight budget.
When it comes to fall decorating, there’s only one word you need to know.
Like when your kid walks down the home accents aisles on your weekend shopping trips with his hands out touching each and every thing he possibly can.
That’s the effect you want.
Pillows with different fabrics, thick chunky blankets, shiny hammered metals, weaved baskets, raw edge wood, fresh plants and flowers, and plush rugs are exactly the type of accessories you want to incorporate.
Doesn’t this pillow just make you want to feel the ridges of the fabric?
Wouldn’t you love to snuggle up with it and a cozy warm blanket with a glass of wine and a good book?
Another great option to take your seasonal decor to the next level is accent furniture.
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking… “Furniture is expensive, Lela. Why the heck would I buy furniture just to put out for one season?”
Now come on, you know me better than that.
First of all, furniture may be expensive, but accent furniture is actually pretty affordable.
And I’m totally not saying buy a $400 chair with leaves and acorns on it, then throw it in the attic until next fall.
How about this cute teal velvet chair?
Perfect for fall, right?
Guess what? It’s perfect for winter, too.
And after winter’s long gone, it’s perfect in the master bedroom by the closet door for putting on shoes.
Accent furniture is usually fairly lightweight so it’s easy to move around the house.
It’s also a great way to add a pop of color without committing to a new paint color or big-ticket sofa.
It’s so important to think outside the box with autumn home decor.
Everybody is doing red and orange and pumpkins and signs with scarecrows saying “Welcome Y’all.”
Everybody is jumping on the white on white on white bandwagon.
And everybody is wasting tons of money every year by following trends.
When you look at the room I created, you instantly think Fall right?
Did you notice, though, that only three of the twelve accents are from Target’s fall-specific collections?
The pumpkin candle is definitely seasonal, the metallic garland subtly says “Autumn” but could work on almost any neutral design’s mantel, and the fox pillow is barely season-related at all.
Other than that, the rest of it is just colors and textures that work well together in a cohesive relationship to remind us of being warm and cozy.
Being warm and cozy makes us think of Fall.
See how that works?
You don’t need five hundred pumpkins and a sign on every wall saying “Fall is here!” to convey your message.
By changing up a few accessories and pairing them with a well-thought out color scheme, you can create a seasonal design that’s affordable, inviting, and timeless.
