Day 6 of In The New House’s Twelve Days of Christmas is something fun for the family. With all the holiday craziness going on right now, it probably seems like you are going non-stop from the time you wake up until the time you go to bed. Take a few hours one night this week to put the laptop away, ignore the pile of laundry, leave your phones in your bedrooms, and have some good old-fashioned family time. That’s what we did last Friday. Elf is our favorite Christmas movie so we planned to watch it together. I took it one step further by creating an Elf-themed meal and snacks to really bring the movie to life.
We started our evening with dinner. The menu included “You Smell Like Beef and Cheese” Hamburger Helper and “Smiling’s My Favorite” smiley fries. We also had brussels sprouts, just because I refuse to serve a meal without a vegetable.
After a couple of board games, we were ready to snuggle up on the couch and watch the movie.
No movie is complete without popcorn and candy. And abiding by the four Elf Food Groups: Candy, Candy Canes, Candy Corn, and Syrup, I sweetened up the popcorn with M&Ms and a caramel drizzle.
Last, but not least, we had warm mugs of hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and peppermint sticks. (We didn’t have any Christmas mugs, but our Star Wars mugs had the right color scheme. And my boys love Star Wars.)
It was so nice to spend the evening together enjoying the holiday season. It’s easy to get caught up in work, decorations, gift shopping, and party planning. Our movie night was exactly what we needed to unwind.
What is your family’s favorite holiday movie? Do you make a special meal when you watch it?
