Home parties are just about the most delightful crunch that you can fathom. For some of us, the thought of bringing that weekend party home strikes terror in our hearts, especially when it comes to after-party drama. Apart from a lot being in a mess, from the living room looking like some war-zone, the sheer fact that your floor type determines the ‘ground-mess’ is enough trouble. At least for me.
First, my floor is crafted using hardwood. Super cozy, right?
Well, it’s only cozy when am sharing it with my family and dog. But whenever someone is knocking at the door, naturally I have to remind myself that my floor comes first and what they are wearing will significantly determine the floor-contact they will have thereof. And when I throw a party at home, I write commandments that the family has to follow strictly, and I religiously ensure party-goers follow them. Let’s just say, to some extent. If you have a hardwood floor like me, tag along as we go through some of them.
While hardwood flooring is gorgeous and gives a great finish, extra care must be taken to maintain the luster. If not, scratches from around the house might make them look worn out and literally ‘tired’ and might even be undesirable. Worse still, they may end up causing injury to the feet as a result of them becoming brittle.
In this regard, tender care must be devoted to this type of flooring especially when you have many guests at home for that weekend party.
1. Make sure to place a mat at the entrance.
The grit that may stick to the shoes should never come near your hardwood floor. At times, it might include sand and dirt, and this shouldn’t touch your floor at any point. Just like sandpaper, grit, dust, and debris as a result of people walking and dancing is a sure recipe for blemishes and nicks on your floor. You need to vacuum the floor immediately to avoid with this. Placing a doormat and ensuring guests use it will save you this headache.

2. No high heels or pets, please.
Yes. It’s your house and therefore, your rules. Do not entertain the people partying to come into the house in high heels. Extra slippers can be placed at the entrance, you know, for those who feel they wouldn’t step on the floor. Usually, heels will leave scratches on the floor, and some pets like dogs that have untrimmed nails will do the same too. And since it wouldn’t be prudent to check if your guest’s dog’s nails are trimmed, discouraging them not to bring them in the house would be safer.
3. Wipe away spills immediately.
Let’s face it, spills in a party will occur. Drinks such as juices, alcohol, water are always on the shopping list, and it’s almost impossible to control a crowd in merriment not to spill some. Someone will accidentally upend a mug of juice, or step in from the rain outside. Having towels, rugs, and mops around will come in handy. Do not wait for long before wiping the spills. Do it immediately regardless of the varnish or sealant on your floor.
4. Use stick-on felt pads for all your furniture.
Party or no party, this should be a rule of thumb. But, chairs are slid in and out under tables, dragged around, and the effect on the floor is scratches and scraping. Unpadded furniture will damage your floor. The use of soft stick-on felt pads at the bottom of your furniture legs will alleviate this, and you won’t keep looking over your shoulder when you hear a chair move. Make it a point of lifting furniture instead of dragging it on the floor.

5. Have someone to constantly clean during the party.
Hiring a cleaning person might seem cumbersome, but it is essential. Let’s face it, apart from liquid spills that will need to be wiped immediately, food crumbs and solid particles spilling on the floor might be quite a daunting task to monitor and control during the party. Few people even notice when they drop food that will surely stick to the floor, especially with high foot traffic. Someone continually cleaning your hardwood floor will help you have your party in peace. However, it is important to note that water should not be used to clean. Instead, you should use specialized cleaning products designed for your floor or recommended by the manufacturer.
My final tip before throwing that party is to ensure that your hardwood floor is in great shape. Fix any squeaks. You don’t want to refine and refurbish a whole floor after the party just because you overlooked its poor state before the party. Observe these points and throw your party in absolute peace of mind.
