This bright and colorful condo has Southwestern style written all over it, but don’t let the vibe fool you, it’s actually in the heart of Boston.
From the bright yellow in the entry and dining area along with the travel-inspired eclectic pieces to the cool shades of blue and the wide array of plants, it’s a perfect escape from the busy town.
This swoonworthy two bedroom home belongs to Madison of Space + Habit.
He shares the condo with his husband, Sky, and their adorable Italian Greyhound named Warren (who definitely steals the show on Madison’s Instagram page).
Over the course of a year, he has turned a basic living space into a tranquil getaway that brings him back to his Arizona roots.
I am so excited to share his home today, and let you in on how this amazing designer put it all together in such a short time frame.
How would you describe your design style?
“Lately my design style has been all over the place! I definitely pull in a lot of inspiration from my Southwestern upbringing. You’ll see a lot of desert and Native American influences. That being said, I also love mid-century modern and so a lot of the larger furniture pieces tend to go that way. But then I think to our guest room and that reeks of like a Latin American boho vibe. I guess eclectic? Very eclectic!”
What’s your favorite room in the house?
“My default has always been the dining room because of its bright pop of yellow but, lately, it’s slowly been becoming our master bedroom. We recently made some changes and it’s just becoming such a fun but tranquil and comfortable retreat! Also, it’s the most southwestern-styled room in our home and features a piece of artwork above the bed that was done by my late grandmother, Rue. It reminds me a lot of my home state of Arizona. I think it’s important to have things that remind you of where you come from.”
What’s the one piece in your home that means the most to you?
“Oh boy. We have a lot of pieces that mean a ton to us! We really like everything to have a story and, while we get some things at the big box retailers, we try to collect and replace those with items that have a history. Can I list two?! I think a lot of the artwork in our space is super special to us. Much of it was created by my grandmother or made by me or friends. I love being surrounded by that stuff. Furniture-wise, we love our refurbed mid-century modern credenza. It’s a piece that, when we saw it, we just had to have it. Not a day goes by that I don’t just love that thing!”
My Best Decorating Tip:
“Just try it. Give it a go. Stores have return policies and paint can be repainted. Start small and tweak repeatedly! Just decorate with the things you love and it will all fall into place.”
What current trend are you loving right now?
“I am loving the dark and sultry colors and fabrics. My mind immediately goes to Danielle from fleeting_interest on Instagram. Those dark walls with that bright tufted yellow velvet sofa and the pop of color from her door in the living room is just amazing. I have been seeing a lot more of that recently. Just look at the latest Ikea catalogue page 62. That’s what I am loving. I don’t think it’s a style that I could ever have in my own home because it’s so polar opposite. But it’s amazing to see people with this style rising up.”
What trends do you wish would go away?
“You know, I love a lot of trends and they tend to resurface even in my own home. There aren’t any that I can think of off the top of my head that I wish would completely disappear. I guess, where I get frustrated a lot of the time is when people lose their creativity and confidence when it comes to designing their space. I think a lot of people point to a catalogue shot and say “give me this” and duplicate it 100%. I think people should mash a lot of trends together and be creative and make a space that inspires them while they live in it. I know not everyone has the eye for it but I think that a lot of people would be super impressed with themselves if they were to give it a shot. A space can change and it can evolve over time. Nothing is ever set in stone when it comes to decor (so I tell myself hahaha).”
Where is your go-to place to find affordable pieces for your home?
“I guess it would depend on what I am looking for. I mostly buy a lot of accent pieces at this point. There are a ton of amazing little shops in my hometown of Cave Creek, Arizona where I find a lot of my Southwestern gear. They are, surprisingly, affordable, too. Lately, I have started shopping at Savers. I didn’t even know the place existed! But I have had some great luck there!”
